“In the Future Club we all dance the same”
Small Reactions’ Night Reactions: MIX001 is a collection of scintillating fragments and observations. Sitting somewhere between sound collage and a formal collection of songs—an album, they call it?—the mixtape serves as a transitional piece between the band’s 2014 debut, Similar Phantoms, and their forthcoming sophomore LP.
Night Reactions: MIXOO1 feeds found sounds, street noise, pop melody, narratives from a broken Teddy Ruxpin, demos, cross chatter, and drum machines through a sieve and commits what’s left to tape. The resulting mixtape exists deep in the gulf between “off the cuff” and “meticulous craftsmanship.” Ambience plays a big part of the narrative, but so too does melody. “RXN-1,” from the more “song heavy” Side One of the tape, was created from a band improvisation that dates back to 2013. “Version 2,” from the weirder second side, is a song from the forthcoming sophomore LP, “Controllerhead,” played in reverse—it’s an homage to The Stone Roses backwards retelling of “Waterfall” in the form of “Don’t Stop” only, here, the reference track is nowhere to be found. The band’s newest member, Ross Politi, contributes two tracks “Angel’s Leash” and “Midnight Secrets.”
The non-collection is what defines the collection. Library music.
